Intro to Geothermal Heating and Cooling

Did you know that there is a nearly unlimited source of stored energy in the earth?  By utilizing this available energy, a heating system can achieve efficiencies that are more than 50% - 70% higher than the most efficient conventional systems.  Today, more than 90% of new homes in the Scandanavian countries are built using ground source heat pump (GSHP) geothermal systems!

A geothermal GSHP heating/cooling system operates just like a refrigerator,  by simply transferring heat (or cool) from one area to another.  Like the refrigerator, heat pumps have been field tested and proven for many years.  A building that is heated and cooled with a GSHP system is comfortable, more efficient and more sustainable than just about any other type of system.  There is NO sacrifice of comfort with GSHP heating and cooling and the systems take about the same space or less in a typical building.  Every GSHP system generates real, measurable energy savings immediately and the investment payback period is generally measured in single digit years.  These systems are designed and installed by professionals and do not require any more maintenance than a conventional heating and cooling system.  There are often special incentives from local utilities and government agencies to encourage the installation of this "green" technology.
